U.S. House Panel Endorses Biodefense Legislation

A U.S. House of Representatives panel on Tuesday endorsed a bill
that would reauthorize key federal biodefense programs, including
the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority and
Project Bioshield.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee announced it had signed
off on the legislation to renew the 2006 Pandemic and All-Hazards
Preparedness Act. The BARDA program, carried out under the Health
and Human Services Department, is intended to foster the
development of experimental medical countermeasures for biological
weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. The office manages
the similarly aimed Bioshield project.
